Mixed fulfillment in a single order: shipping, pickup, preorder, and digital.

Most platforms treat fulfillment as a single decision per order. The customer picks shipping or pickup, applied to the entire cart. That model breaks for any customer whose order legitimately spans multiple fulfillment types: a tent shipped to home, hiking boots picked up at the local store, a preorder jacket released next month, a digital gift card delivered by email.

A single cart accepts items with different fulfillment requirements, and checkout recognizes each item type and presents the right fulfillment options for each one. All four paths run inside one coordinated order with one checkout, one payment authorization, and one order history record.

Complex order fulfillment workflows

Orders may ship from multiple warehouses, each with different cutoff times, inventory availability, and delivery schedules.

The commerce platform must coordinate these constraints in real time so customers understand exactly how and when their orders will be fulfilled.

Multi-source order splitting with per-package tracking.

B2B and specialty commerce often pulls inventory from multiple sources for a single order. A retailer's order might combine items from a primary warehouse, a regional warehouse, and a manufacturer dropship, depending on what's available where.

The platform determines availability per item at cart time and splits the order into separate packages, one per source, with each package carrying its own tracking number, delivery estimate, and lifecycle status. The customer sees one order in their history with all packages grouped underneath, each independently trackable.

Multi-warehouse fulfillment on a fixed regional delivery route

Distributors serving customers from multiple warehouses have to extend catalog depth without breaking delivery reliability. The hard part is coordinating inter-warehouse transfers with a fixed regional truck schedule so the customer still gets next-day delivery regardless of which warehouse the items come from.

Two modes handle different warehouse alignment patterns: Cross Dock, where items travel overnight and carry an earlier order cutoff with a cart split if the cutoff is missed; and Multi Dock, where warehouse schedules are pre-aligned so all items share the same cutoff and the customer sees a single unified cart.

Order orchestration across ten stages and two fulfillment paths

Modern commerce orders rarely flow through a single system. Validation, fraud screening, supplier routing, fulfillment, invoicing, and returns each live in different places, and the order has to move cleanly between them without manual intervention.

A single orchestration engine manages the full lifecycle: address validation, fraud check, automated PO splitting per supplier, dual-path routing through direct integrations and Logic Broker, sequential processing to prevent race conditions, real-time supplier feedback, and automated retries on every step.

BOPIS architecture with mixed-cart, multi-store fulfillment.

BOPIS sounds simple in the abstract. The architecture gets harder when customers want to mix pickup and delivery in the same cart, choose different stores for different items, and have favorite-store preferences persist across sessions.

This architecture lets customers select home delivery or in-store pickup at the product page level, with real-time stock visibility per store. Items from different stores can sit in the same cart alongside home-delivery items. At checkout, the order automatically splits by destination, integrating with Dynamics 365 for store and warehouse fulfillment.

Personalization that starts with a zip code.

B2C and DTC commerce often treats location as a checkout-time concern. By the time the customer reaches checkout and discovers their delivery date or shipping cost, they've already invested time browsing products that may not be available to them.

A single zip code, captured through manual entry or IP geolocation, drives eight downstream experiences: accurate delivery dates, nearest-store detection, real-time stock and pickup options, free shipping eligibility, location-matched cart prices and taxes, pre-filled checkout details, regional homepage content, and location-based promotions.
